It matters how YOU start if you want to avoid fitness burnout.
After working with hundreds of athletes, we’ve seen different kinds of beginners.
You may be the person that jumps in headfirst to the deep-end – 5 classes a week, extra sessions, doing fasted cardio, eating paleo, counting macros, & tracking steps.
There’s also the person who is fairly timid at trying something new. You never gain the comfortability enough to show up as consistently as you want. Every time you drive to the gym, it’s a battle you’ve won with your inner critic.
Then there’s the rule follower. If we tell you to only work out 3 days a week, you’ll listen.
And if there’s a rule follower, there’s definitely a rule breaker. “HEY! So, I’ve been doing extra cardio at night…”.
Regardless of what camp you fall into, or if we missed you all together, here’s what we have learned over the years as the best way to get started:
- Start slow.
- Start light.
- Focus on technique, and don’t judge yourself.
- Trust your coach.
- Be patient.
- Listen to your body.
- Less is more.
Don’t play the comparison game.
Whether you haven’t started your journey yet, or are just getting going, hopefully, this advice helps to give you the best start to this journey. You’ve made the right decision to care for yourself, now let’s make sure it’s a lasting decision with continual benefits.
And hey, if you’re a veteran and you look at this like, “well, I did the complete opposite of all those suggestions” – don’t worry. You can still take the advice above and apply it to your journey now!
